Some dogs are designed to reduce or minimize the possibility of an allergic response, as by containing relatively few or no potentially irritating substances. They are considered as ‘Hypoallergenic with fewer tendencies to cause allergic reactions as compared with other breeds. Before getting a dog as a pet, consider the substances you are sensitive to and decide accordingly. All dogs are not the same in terms of quality and vary as long hair, short hair or hairless breeds. You can get them from a pet store, an animal shelter or a breeder.

Terriers, Schnauzers and Poodles are the hypoallergenic varieties with short hair. The hair lacks fineness and is not delicate in texture. It grows to be of an inferior quality unless the dirt and parasites are properly removed from the skin. Grooming is important to prevent a dull and roughened surface free from polish with the use of a matte. This is termed as ‘Matting’ which leads to skin rashes and other complications. These breeds have hair which can be compared to the human hair.

There are other breeds like the Afghan hound which has longer hair and brushing it is vital task. Like the short haired breed, even they do not shed and require constant brushing. The best practice is to apply a brush twice to your pet’s hair to keep them clean. These breeds usually have a longer and bright textured coat.

Some of them have a covering of short hair lying underneath the outer hair of their coat which is called as the undercoat. These perform the functions of keeping your dogs warm in cold temperatures. They serve the purpose of storing body heat thus maintaining a constant temperature.

It is difficult for dogs without an undercoat to endure through chilling climates. So, it is recommended by breeders to keep your dogs inside rather than setting them free outside.

We apply all sorts of cosmetic products to keep ourselves glowing. Interestingly, the same applies for a dog especially with the hairless breed. So, the next time you go out in the market, get creams and lotions for your pet. The layer of hair protects them from scorching heat, so you would need to apply these lotions to the hairless breed as they do not have a natural covering and thus can get easily dehydrated on exposure to sun.

Even though you have made all the efforts to make your dog attractive, there would be no gains in terms of a sound health. The complete package for nurturing would also include regular exercise and spending quality time with them everyday. If you teach them the right manners, they would cultivate the habit of a routine life and behave in your absence. You should never leave theme alone for prolonged periods as they have a tendency to feel left out and can get furious. So, ask a friend or neighbor or board your pet at a proper place. If well trained, it would not be a nuisance to anyone.

Even though no one can tell in advance what will happen in future, we all try our best to maintain a pleasant life in terms of present. We take care of all aspects of our life. Once a pet becomes a part of your family, it is your responsibility. Make sure you are taking it to the vet for regular check-ups and counseling. Get a list of all that needed and is to be avoided for a healthy and longer life. Smaller breeds are susceptible to problems like arthritis, eyesight issues and tumors. As this could vary depending on the breed, do your home work and gather as much information as possible. Taking care of the basic needs of your pet will go a long way in keeping them fit.
