Be it a human being or an animal, everyone needs a home. There are several homeless strays who wander on the streets as they have nowhere to go. But government and certain private bodies come up with dog shelters which provide a security shield for these deserted animals. For people who cannot afford much, these dog pounds are the best places to get a pet as it is not very costly. Thus, the dogs also get a chance to be cared and nurtured.

Some of these shelters follow the practice of mercy-killing which could be due to a variety of reasons. If a pet shows signs of short termed illness and are difficult to manage within the available resources, usually, they are subjected to euthanasia. This could also happen if the shelter has a financial crisis making it difficult to provide enough space and attention for everyone, thus killing the healthier lots as well.

Usually, private dog pounds do not follow any such practices. Compliant dogs, who are relatively healthy are looked after until they find foster homes or an owner. However, these shelters do not follow the practice of mercy killing. Instead, they do not accept animals for their shelter homes which could be because of the fact that they have to struggle due to insufficient funds or space. Although this is a disadvantage, it is far humane than the idea of killing because of these limitations.

These private homes are also popular as they take charge of the initial veterinary care and provide vaccination except for rabies. They provide low cost spaying and neutering. The process involves surgical removal of the female's ovaries making them infertile. They are mutilated and can never breed in future.

Even though these homes are constantly working towards providing a shelter to these abandoned animals, any endeavouring owner still opts for the pet shops. This might be as they want the best in terms of quality and prefer a dog with sound health. Thus, the stray animals either remain homeless or subjected to compromising circumstances in a shelter home. It has led the Animals welfare organizations to come into picture as they are constantly trying to create and alertness and attentiveness amongst the masses. They try to convey the conditions of these animals in shelter homes and the private pet shops, thus urging people to come ahead.

Before you go and buy a pet, it is always advisable to do some research. Search for "dog shelters" or "animal shelters" on the internet and go through your local yellow pages. You need to have information about the best possible organizations available in your city. This would certainly help to select the best and you would never regret.

Select the best place which guarantees a skilful performance without any difficulty. Once you have taken a decision about which facility to opt for, do not immediately buy the pet. It is always better if you first get acquainted with the environment these animals live in. You may reach out and communicate with the staffs of the facility. They are experts and will let you know how to go about the daily errands of cleaning and feeding the animals. You may also change your mind, in case you have any doubts or want to look for another facility.

As most of these are stray dogs, one cannot determine their past. Some of them might be skilled and proficient, in case, they have been ever trained earlier before they were abandoned. Although it is not easy to do a background verification, you can always make sure whether a particular dog is tailor- made for you. If it suits your budget, just go for it. In doing so, you are not only providing a home but also saving a life as who knows that it might be the next victim of mercy killing.

When it comes to own a pet, there is no doubt that a dog is considered the best accomplice and partner compared to other pets. So, now you know where to head and get a small, little puppy which can make your life exciting.
