By nature the cats are quiet, lovable and playful animals. We can often see a number of them in homes around us, some sleeping over the window sill, some lying comfortable in the owner’s lap. Since the times we remember, the cats have always been the most popular pets, but as per research, the cats were not domestic creatures until approximately 5,000 years back. It was than that they started being domesticated in the famous Nile valley.

ImageInitially the cats were considered to be wild animals, but with time as people started feeding them with different food, the cats became subtle towards them, as they were not harmed by the humans and started getting friendlier, some of them even started living in human homes. Gradually, the cats started accepting humans and allowed them to touch and hold them.

The cats were considered to be a loyal species during those times, and often served as hunters, owing to their capability to sleep for shorter durations in comparison to the dogs. Also they have a better hearing and seeing capability than dogs, especially in the nights. Even if a member of the house would make any movement, the cats woke and the dogs enjoyed their dream world. The cats were loved by all and also got along with dogs and people got used to having them around.

In the present times, the cats are not used as hunters anymore, but serve as companions to humans and also form an important space in the animal shows. A lot of varieties are available in this species varying from the most common alley cats to the Siamese breeds
Different breeds have different characteristics and some of them may be unique to their breed, and if maintained properly, the cats will always be friends for years ahead.

ImagePrior to getting a cat or a kitten, it is always advised to ensure the source’s reliability. You may consider getting a cat from a breeder and it is important to be aware of the breeder’s reputation. Make a visit to the cattery and check if it has been kept nicely, whether the litter boxes are properly placed as well as the food and water dishes. Also see that the cattery is not overcrowded with the remaining kittens and possesses a clean surrounding. The cats and the kittens available there should appear to be healthy with shining coats and are properly caged. If you can observe cats which appear to be sick or have ribs which show, make notice of it.

While choosing the kitten, make sure that he is not frightened for any reason whatsoever and is in the habit of being touched and held. This depends on the way they were handled when younger; the ones who have been handled nicely would always show a better temperament. A good breeder would never offer a kitten before he is at least twelve weeks old, a few of them choosing to wait up to sixteen weeks. This ensures that the kitten is in good health and has developed a proper immune system.

It is no hidden fact that cats are great pet. You can easily get a cat or a kitten from a cattery, an adoption agency or even through local newspapers. Another source from where the cats can be obtained is the local pound, but this is generally not preferred.
Wherever you get your cat from, always ensure that they are in good health, as you would not have to face problems in the future concerning his health. If the cat you ate taking is healthy, it is a clear indication that they were properly taken care of and have been vaccinated on proper time.
